Young Goodman Brown Q&A

  1. What do you think Hawthorne's purpose was for writing this story?
I think Hawthorne’s purpose for writing this story was to say that you can see people or life a certain way but once you know something or something impacts you your view changes. It changes how you see someone or the world. For example when you trust someone and someone tells you something or you find something out that they did they break your trust and that affects how you are from then on.

2.Hawthorne states that Brown's wife is "aptly named" Faith.  After reading the story, do you agree?  Does Faith's name fit her personality?  Does Brown have true faith in her?

In the beginning of the story Faith seems like a nice, gentle, and kind woman who can do no wrong. Faith seems to fit her persona she seems as though she herself can do no wrong. Brown had faith in her and believed that he can always count on her to be there for him no matter what. Toward the end Gaith is at a meeting of devil worshipers and that’s when Brown loses his faith in her and her name no longer fits her personality.

3.What do you think the pink ribbons signify?

The pink ribbon to me symbolizes the good something pure which is represented as white and the devil or something bad(sin) which is represented with red. When you mix the colors together you would get pink.  To me the pink ribbons represent both good and bad. It represents Browns faith.

4.Was everything Brown witnessed real, a figment of his imagination, something conjured by evil, or a dream?

In my opinion everything Brown witnessed was a dream. I believe he fell asleep and woke up to his dream. If it had been real no one would act differently if they knew he saw the them last night and Faith would be just as worried if she had been there that night she would relay on her husband. Everyone in town was acting as if they had no clue to what was happening and some dreams do feel vivid but they are dreams.

5.Who do you think the old man really is?  What textual clues tell you this?

The old man who walked with Brown to me was the devil. He was the devil because he had a staff which seemed like a serpent and he knew Browns father and grandfather. If he knew them he should’ve been dead of old age but he is still alive and trying to lead Brown to evil. To a place where people worship the devil.

6.What does the staff represent?  Do you think the staff leads Brown onward or is the primary motivator Brown's own conscience/mind?

The staff represents a serpent, which belongs to the devil/old man. I believe Browns own conscience motivated him to follow the staff. After he heard Faith and saw her pink ribbon he lost his faith and decided to go to where the staff lead him. He could have left the staff and gone home but his mind told him otherwise.

7.If Brown had not ventured into the forest, how would his life be different?  If he'd stayed home, would Brown still have Faith?  Would he still trust his wife and his fellow townspeople?

If Brown had stayed home I believe he would still trust everyone and he would still have his faith with him. If he hadn’t gone into the forest he would have faith and he would believe in the townspeople who he’s known for so long.

Was it Only a Dream?

I believe Young Goodman Brown wasn’t dreaming. He couldn’t have remembered every detail of his dream if he was asleep. When a person wakes up you remember bits and pieces of your dream you don’t usually remember everything. I believe Young Goodman Brown actually went through all of these things if he hadn’t he would still trust everyone around him. The pink ribbons Young Goodman Brown saw was a mixture of the red which represents the devil and white which represents being pure mixed it makes pink. Young Goodman Brown didn’t have a dream he went through everything and they may have made him sleep and carried him to his house so he would believe that it was a dream.

Today I was thinking...

Sep. 10
That day i was thinking mainly of how the rest of the day was going to be. I was also thinking of ways i could keep my nephew busy while I was babysitting. He has a lot of energy throughout the day and only cries or throws tantrums when hes really tired. When i'm in class and i have not much to do i mainly go through my phone play a game or two and just space out i don't think and i just sing along in my head with the music i may be listening to or that i may hear next.

Young Goodman Brown Insight

Young Goodman brown is a man who is known for being good and in the beginning of the story he knows he is going to leave his faith behind to go do something he knows will disappoint his Faith if she knew where he was going. He leaves with a man who can be or is seen as a bad person maybe the devil who is taking him somewhere. He later finds out he knew his father and grandfather who both  did bad things which took him as a shock because he always though they were noble people. As they approach a older lady is were we left off.

The Making of an Essay

Writing an essay for me is simple it requires facts and a structure to put your thoughts into a format. An essay requires a body structure it’s not as complicated as it sounds once your used to writing essays. Once used to it ideas come faster and you don’t need to do an outline and you get to start on your essay. An essay is based on a thought a question or a fact you want to add to or respond to.  An essay can have 3-5 paragraphs the main idea of an essay is to convince the reader of what your saying. You want to put a tone that convinces the reader that you know what your talking about and that you have strong facts on the subject. Making an essay sometimes takes a while when your not sure what to write or how to respond to a certain question but once you get the hang of it it’s pretty simple to do.

The Conscience of a Hacker Essay

The author is trying to show that teenagers are in a way judged on a daily basis. At the end of each paragraph the author writes he uses repetition by saying “they’re all alike “ a way adults may view us. When we do math without showing work teachers/ adults assume we cheated although we know we used our head and didn’t need to write down the whole thing. Adults view students/ teens all in a certain way they see them as irresponsible, loud and always doing something on their phones. Not all teens are the same many teens are curious outgoing and are fast learners.
There are many teachers at schools who don’t get that many students learn quicker and don’t necessarily show work because they find it faster to do their work in their head. Teachers are quick to think that that student may have cheated. A few teachers who are rare like to embrace those students and help them achieve more things. In the article the author says that because we are all alike we can achieve more things in our life more so than the adults think. He thinks that we all can embrace and achieve greater things. He says that he found the computer that didn’t judge him and if it showed that he did something wrong it was because he truly did something else not because it didn’t like him or feel threatened by him.
In a way the author is saying that not many people achieve things because sometimes we are held back. Being curious is a crime according to the author the government feels threatened by hackers because they have been outsmarted by curious people. They’re very only crime is being curious they see no color no nationality they know one and other yet haven’t seeen each other.  The author states that they can catch one hacker yet since we are all alike as they always say then there will always be more curious people.
