Hawthorne’s “Young Goodman Brown” and Edgar Allan Poe’s “Dream Within a Dream” both have similarities and differences. They both talk about similar things yet can be interpreted in different ways depending on the perspective of the reader. Young Goodman Brown is a man who is going through a long dark night full of decisions and ways that test him. While Dream within a Dream talks about a man thinking and we read how he interprets certain things. Both of these have a tone to them and have some similarities along with it.
The two stories told talk about men who are in a way thinking of life but in different ways. Young Goodman Brown is losing faith and hope in everything in his life he is also losing his wife Faith. In Edgar Allan Poe's "Dream within a Dream" the narrator is talking about time. Brown is facing his conflicts in the forest to show the reader suspense and a dark theme in the story. In "Dream Within a dream" the narrator is talking about life and how things seem as though they were dreams, but everything is happening in the narrators mind where he is having these thoughts. Brown is facing many things all the people he knew and everyone he thought were good people he soon found out that they had sinned in horrible ways and worshiped the devil. He was willing to forget that because he had his Faith but when he saw that that was gone as well he assumed he lost everything he once loved, but at the end Young Goodman Brown wakes up in the forest and sees everyone act as though nothing happened. As where the narrator in the poem is talking about time and how it goes by fast. And it seems as though it had just been an innocent dream.
They both talk about dreams and whether certain things are true or just our imaginations playing a trick on us. Some things although a dream seem very real and vivid as though it was a memory and not a dream but we know that it wasn’t true. Young Goodman Brown couldn’t recall wether it was a dream or not or so he chose to believe that it was real so he lived his life horribly and didn’t enjoy it. I’m “Dream Within a Dream” the narrator didn’t know what to believe if everything seemed to be a dream because it was that vivid or it was a memory.
